As one of the most beloved parks in Southern Illinois, Giant City State Park is a haven for nature lovers looking to spend a day in the great outdoors. Located within the Shawnee National Forest near the city of Makanda, this 4,000 acre state park contains an abundance of outdoor activities including 8 distinct hiking trails, rappelling, rock climbing, picnicking, and horseback riding. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1980, this state park also contains a dedicated nature preserve, several archeological sites including a prehistoric stone fort, and carvings dating back to the Civil War era. Rounding out a perfect days worth of hikes are 4 of the most visited trails here; Indian Creek, Giant City, Devils Standtable, and Stone Fort Trails.
