Southern Illinois and the Shawnee National Forest are overflowing with prehistoric cultural sites that include earthen mounds, stone forts, petroglyphs and pictographs. As the largest rock art site in the state of Illinois, Piney Creek Ravine State Natural Area contains over 200 petroglyphs dating back from the Late Woodland to the Early Mississippian Period. Considered a national treasure by archeologists, the site is world renowned and regularly studied by academic professionals. A 2.0 mile hiking trail used to access the rock art site also explores this steep canyon filled with a dynamic habitat of over 400 native plants, cliff overhangs and rock shelters, plus several wet weather waterfalls.
