Hidden away in a remote section of the Shawnee National Forest, the Illinois Iron Furnaces’ idilic setting makes it a great place to spend an afternoon picnicking, swimming, and even fishing. Commemorated on the National Register of Historic Places, this giant chimney is the last remaining charcoal-fired iron furnace in Illinois. In operation throughout the 1800’s, iron produced at this site was essential in the construction of the Union ironclad boats that patrolled the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers during the Civil War. Located on the banks of Big Creek, it boasts one of the best old fashioned swimming holes in the area and is a great place to fish for bass and channel catfish.

Printed on premium fine art paper.

Matte Finish.
