Fern Clyffe State Park Waterfall Poster
Known as “The Most Beautiful Spot in Illinois” since 1923, Ferne Clyffe State Park was one of the most popular parks established in Southern Illinois, predating the creation of the Shawnee National Forest. Originally opened on Sundays for a 10 cent admission, the state purchased the property and established it as the second largest state park in the region in 1949. Its 2,430 acres are composed of several gorges and canyons containing beautiful forests, caves, waterfalls, and limestone bluffs. With 18 different trails to chose from here, we decided to tackle the 3 most widely trekked paths in the park; Hawks Cave, Big Rocky Hollow, and a portion of the Waterfall Trail.
