Indiana Dunes Becomes A National Park

Indiana Dunes Becomes A National Park

Congratulations to all Hoosiers! The state of Indiana was finally awarded a national park! Its a long time overdue. I can remember as a kid taking long weekend trips from Chicago to visit the dunes. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before. The park is comprised of over 15,000 acres of dunes, oak savannas, swamps, bogs, marshes, prairies, rivers, and forests. It contains 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. The biological diversity within the national park is among the highest per unit area of all national parks. Over 1,100 flowering plant species and ferns make their homes here. The park is renowned for its bird life of more than 350 species which have been observed here. These shores are a breeding ground for the great lakes population of blue heron. This park is a real treasure for the midwest and everyone should make the trip to check it out!
