Glacier National Park, The Trip Of A Lifetime

Glacier National Park, The Trip Of A Lifetime

Its called “The last best place”. Glacier National Park lives up to its name and so much more. It had been on my bucket list since my days of binge watching episodes on the travel channel. Mesmerized by the epic scenery, I vowed to one day make the trek. Little did I know that it would take 10 years to do so. The 6 hour trip from Yellowstone seemed harmless enough. After all we had made the drive all the way from Denver and we were still alive. Just barely. Once on our way we soon realized why Montana is called Big Sky Country. Driving with the Rocky Mountain chain to our left and rolling hills to our right, it felt as if we were being funneled due north straight towards our destination. After endlessly driving through sleepy town after one stop sign village, we arrived at Browning, MT. Being the largest town in the BlackFeet Indian Reservation it was our last chance to turn back or stock up on supplies. An hour later we were at the foothills of GNP and Flathead National Forest. Crossing the stream from St.Mary’s, MT into the park itself felt overwhelming. Not only had my body taken a beating from 5 days of driving, but emotionally I was a wreck. Ten years too long had I waited and here I was marveling at one of the most wondrous sights in North America.

Some of the main sights include the “Going To The Sun Road’. It takes visitors from St. Mary westbound over the continental divide to West Glacier. Makes sure to stop by and see Jackson Glacier along the way. Jackson Glacier is the seventh largest glacier in the park and the most visible of the 25 glaciers left in the park By 2030, Glaciologists believe that all of the 150 glaciers in the park will vanished. Incredible hikes in the St. Mary/Rising Sun area include Baring Falls, St Mary Falls, and Virginia Falls. North of St. Mary is the Many Glacier entrance of the park. On your way in make sure to stop at the harbor and catch a relaxing ferry ride on Swiftcurrent Lake. Near the lodge is the trailhead for Redrock Falls, Ptarmigan Falls, Granite Park Chalet. There really is too much to mention. It was the cherry on top of the sundae and it tasted bittersweet to leave. I guess Ill start planning for our return in 10 more years.
